Bad habits return, Brewers fall to Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers faded out of contention this summer because of a bullpen that failed them, but the team rebounded to put a solid stretch together recently, winning eight of their last nine games, until the bad habit returned in the series finale at Wrigley Field Thursday afternoon.  The Brewers built leads of 7-2 and 9-3 only to see the Chicago Cubs battle back with a six run sixth inning.  Milwaukee pushed back on top 11-9 heading into the 9th but Francisco Rodriguez couldn't hold it, giving up three runs in Chicago's last at bat, a disheartening 12-11 loss.  Rodriguez is now 2-7 for the year.   The Brewer offense certainly did it's job with Jonathan Lucroy smashing a grand slam home run, Ryan Braun hit his National League leading 37th of the year and Cody Ransom went deep to put Milwaukee on top late.  Rickie Weeks went five for five but it all went for naught.  Alfonso Soriano capped the rally with a line drive off the wall with one out in the 9th.  Shawn Marcum started but lasted only four innings, giving up three runs and five hits.  Livan Hernandez surrendured five runs in just an inning and a third and Rodriguez was charged with three runs and four hits while recording only one out in the 9th.   Brewer pitchers issued 11 walks in the loss.  Milwaukee (62-68) returns home to face the Pittsburgh Pirates at Miller Park Friday night and in the afternoon, the new statue of Hall of Fame announcer Bob Uecker will be unveiled in a ceremony outside the stadium.
