Assembly candidate to continue to run, despite recent OWI conviction

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A Republican candidate for a local Assembly seat says he will continue to run despite being recently convicted of drunk driving.

90th District candidate David VanderLeest was ordered to pay a fine for first-offense OWI following his arrest June 24.  VanderLeest was nearly twice the legal limit to drive.

The 35-year-old has a long history of run-ins with the law, including disorderly conduct, a restraining order, and a couple of arrests for domestic abuse.

VanderLeest faces Joel Diny Tuesday's primary ballot to replace the retiring Karl Van Roy.

VanderLeest led the recall effort against Democratic Senator Dave Hanson last spring, and also became the default candidate to face him in the recall election.  The Republican Party endorsed candidate Rep. John Nygren failed to get enough nominating signatures to get on the ballot for the primary.

VanderLeest is also being investigated by the Government Accountability Board for recall petition signature fraud.
