After getting unceremoniously swept over the weekend in St. Louis, the Milwaukee Brewers returned to Miller Park to welcome the hottest team in baseball. But the Crew cooled off the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 in the opener of a three game series. Yovani Gallardo allowed a run on six hits in seven innings for his 10th win and got a big sixth inning from the offense. Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart hit back to back solo home runs and Martin Maldanado added a two run shot to put Milwaukee up 5-0. Cincinnati touched Gallardo for a run in the 7th and then added two more in the 8th to make it interesting. Francisco Rodriguez was charged with both in just one-third of an inning. It took a running catch with the bases loaded by Norichka Aoki to prevent a really big inning. John Axford recorded five outs for his 18th save. Milwaukee (49-59) will send Mike Fiers against Johnny Cueto in game two of the series Tuesday night.
22 year old Jean Segura made is major league debut at shortstop for the Brewers Monday night. Acquired from the Angels in the Zack Greinke trade, Segura was called up from AA Huntsville after Cesar Isturis was placed on waivers and claimed by the Washington Nationals. Considered one of the top prospects in the Angels organization, Segura went 0-4 at the plate but manager Ron Roenicke says he will see extensive action through the end of the season.
