APPLETON, Wis. (WTAQ) - 39-year-old Scott Schmidt has been convicted in the murder of his estranged wife, Kelly Wing Schmidt and injuring Barbara Wing. A jury finding the former Appleton firefighter guilty of first-degree intentional homicide, reckless endangerment and felony bail jumping.
During closing arguments Wednesday, Outagamie County DA Carrie Schneider recalled 2 police officers to the stand with the testimony from the witnesses didn't match Schmidt's testimony of certain events. Schmidt was also asked about letters he wrote to his kids, which he described as suicide notes.
Earlier in the day, Schmidt was cross-examined and claimed he did not intend to shoot Kelly Wing-Schmidt, but had gone to the house to win her back.
Schmidt's attorneys were hoping for the lesser charge of first-degree reckless homicide instead of first-degree intentional homicide.
