The Packers family tree continues to branch out, at the expense of General Manager Ted Thompson's personel department.  John Dorsey was introduced as the new General Manager of the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday.  His hiring was announced just as the Packers-49ers game was getting underway Saturday night.  Dorsey spent 24 years in the Packer organization, first as a tough, scrappy linebacker from the University of Connecticut. His playing days ended when he blew out his knee in a freak injury during pre-game warmups before the 1989 season opener.  He stuck around as a scout and then worked his way up the food chain.  He became College Scouting Director, moved in to pro personnel but then left after the 1998 season to join Mike Holmgren (and Thompson), in Seattle. He came came in 2000 and by last year, was promoted to Director of Football Operations. Dorsey is a no-nonsense talent evaluator and I enjoyed spending time with him on the sidelines of training camp practices, shooting the breeze over this draft choice or that longshot free agent.  He regularly appeared as a guest on the 5th Quarter Show during the pre-season. Dorsey's depature further erodes Thompson's once, talent laden scouting staff.  He's lost a key member in each of the last three years.  First, De Pere native John Schneider took the GM job in Seattle and that's working out pretty well, restocking the Seahawks with Pete Carroll into an NFC force to be reckoned with.  The third round drafting of Russell Wilson looks like a home run.  Last year, Reggie McKenzie left to become the General Manager of the Oakland Raiders.  McKenzie had interviewed for several GM jobs over the last couple of years and is finally getting his shot.  Now Dorsey.  Thompson rarely hires from the outside, his preference is to promote from within.  If that trend continues, look for Eliot Wolf, Ron Wolf's son, to move up another step on the ladder from Director of Pro Personnel, to the leader of football operations.  Brian Gutekunst is the current Director of College Scouting and former NFL fullback Alonzo Highsmith, a Senior Personnel Executive and trusted Thompson confidant, could also take on a larger role.  This scouting team helped assemble the Super Bowl XLV Champions.  That success has led other NFL teams to pluck the fruit of the Packer tree again.
