It took the entire weekend but the Packers have finally come to terms with veteran free agent running back Cedric Benson.   The former number one pick of the Bears 8 years ago, wore out his welcome in Chicago quickly with disappointing production and off-field arrests for driving both a car and a boat while under the influence.  The former Texas standout ressurected his career in Cincinnati where he put up solid numbers.  Benson rushed for over a thousand yards in each of the past three seasons with the Bengals.  Playing in 44 of 48 games over that span, Benson ran for 3429 yards.  In 2009, Benson roughed up the Packers for 141 yards in a game at Lambeau Field, a 31-24 Cincinnati victory.  Despite the numbers, Benson was released by the Bengals and spent the summer looking for work.  At age 29, there were few takers until the Packers expressed interest late last week after an inauspicious pre-season debut for Ryan Grant's heir apparent James Starks.  He dropped a pass and fumbled on the opening series in San Diego and then left the game with a turf toe injury that Mike McCarthy described as "week to week". With Brandon Saine nursing a hamstring injury, rookie free agent Du'ane Bennett out with a knee injury and Alex Green getting limited practice work while coming back from major knee surgery in 2011, the Packers are stretched thin at running back.  Benson doesn't neccessarily fit the one cut and go type of back Green Bay has deployed under McCarthy, he's more of a between the tackles banger, but he does offer veteran insurance at the position.  He signed a one year contract for the veteran's minimum of $850,000.00 according to the National Football Post.  Benson was apparently seeking some guaranteed money but the Packers resisted and with no other suitors coming forward, he'll join the Packers at practice today.  Under the new CBA rules, players must spend at least the first two days working in shells rather than full pads and with only two practices scheduled this week, it's unlikely Benson will make his Packers debut against the Cleveland Browns this Thursday night.  His first appearance will have to wait until Green Bay travels to Cedric's old haunts, Cincinnati on August 23.
