Training Camp resumed Sunday night at Ray Nitschke field for the Pack but the numbers were light under the lights. Mike McCarthy gave nine veteran players an extra night off. The list included Aaron Rodgers, Charles Woodson, Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, Ryan Pickett, A.J. Hawk, Jarrett Bush, Jeff Saturday and Anthony Hargrove. John Kuhn could have joined them but after getting cleared to practice in pads for the first time this summer, was out on the field with the rest of the squad. Desmond Bishop also worked in pads for the first time. McCarthy announced Marshall Newhouse and Jennings suffered concussions in Friday night's Family Night Scrimmage. Neither was ruled out for Thursday's pre-season opener in San Diego. With Newhouse down, Herb Taylor worked at left tackle with the starting offense.
There was some feistiness to the practice with at least three scuffles breaking out. Jarius Wynn and rookie Greg Van Roten took swings at each other, Jamari Lattimore knocked the helmet off guard Don Barclay and Robert Francois and Shea Allard tangled briefly. During the goal line drill, Bishop nailed fullback Nic Cooper who dropped a swing pass but McCarthy thought the hit was a bit much, chastising Bishop and then yelling at the defensive coaches that this wasn't a live tackling period.
Every day, offensive and defensive linemen spend time on pass rushing and protection drills. They go one on one and on Sunday, number one pick Nick Perry has one of the most eye-opening reps against Bryan Bulaga. Perry got tremendous leverage on a bull rush and knocked Bulaga on his rear. Bryan rarely loses in this drilll and Perry hasn't shown much until that play, it was impressive.
McCarthy is altering his camp schedule next week. Sunday, August 12 and Monday, August 13 practices were originally set for 7:00 PM, Tuesday, August 14 at 3:30, but all three workouts are moving to 11:15 AM instead.
