The Green Bay Packers got hit over the head early and kicked in the gut on the final snap in the 2010 Pre-Season opener at Lambeau Field Saturday night, falling 27-24 before 68,958 Midwest Shrine game fans. Phil Dawson's 46 yard field goal sailed through as the clock expired for the final margin. Dawson nailed a 58 yarder with 1:27 to play to tie the score after the Packers rallied from an early 14-0 deficit. Against the starting defense, Jake Delhomme lead an 80 yard, 11 play march on the opening series, capped by Jerome Harrison's 4 yard touchdown run for a stunning 7-0 lead 6 minutes into the game. On the Pack's first offensive play, Ryan Grant fumbled, Sheldon Brown recovered and 3 plays later, it was 14-0 as Seneca Wallace hit Brian Robiske for a score in the corner of the end zone against a diving Nick Collins. Aaron Rodgers and the passing game looked sharp after that. Rodgers hit 10 strraight and finished his night 12 of 13 for 159 yards and a score, a beautiful 25 yard strike to Greg Jennings for the first points of the night. John Kuhn capped a 72 yard drive with a nifty two yard touchdown burst to tie the game at 14. Cleveland answered as Wallace found tight end Ben Watson behind A.J. Hawk for a 20 yard score and a touchdown lead at the half. With Matt Flynn quarterbacking, Green Bay drove 78 yards in 10 plays in the third quarter and Kregg Lumpkin finished the drive with a one yard score to even the game at 21. Mason Crosby put the Pack on top from 33 yards out but Cleveland had the two biggest kicks in the waning minutes.
The Packers finished with 340 yards on offense but converted only 3 of 11 third downs. They also fumbled the ball 4 times, losing two. Sam Shields muffed a punt and the return game as a whole was dreadful. Green Bay averaged less than a yard on 6 punt returns and only 13.8 yards on five kickoff returns.
Medically speaking, only two injuries of note, Grant took a blow to the head on his one and only carry of the night. He wobbled to the sidelines after his first carry fumble and didn't return but said he felt fine after the game. Backup tight end Tom Crabtree also had to leave the game with a hand injury.
