How could the NFC's best defense look so bad in the playoff loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Outside of Clay Matthew and his 10 sacks, there really wasn't much pressure on opposing quarterbacks and when Aaron Kampman and Al Harris were lost for the season with knee injuries, the unit became vulnerable. But leaks were springing up even earlier in the season. I'm not sure what made Harris more upset, Brett Favre carving up the secondary in the Metrodome or Derrick Martin not giving outside help on a touchdown pass. Martin was subbing for the injured Atari Bigby. Josh Bell was the goat on Ben Roethlisberger's final 38 of a 503 yard day when he hit Mike Wallace for the game winning touchdown. Matt Giordano was also on the field that game because of injuries. The secondary produced the NFL's defensive player of the year in Charles Woodson and a pro bowler in Nick Collins but in the end, that still wasn't enough to slow down Kurt Warner who threw more touchdown passes (5) than incompletions (4) in the 51-45 playoff loss. The Packers hope Harris returns from knee surgery and coupled with Woodson, secures the corner positions. Tramon Williams is a nice player who will be the next in line starter. Bigby has a hard time staying healthy as does Will Blackmono and former second round pick Pat Lee. Reinforcements are needed and in this weekend's draft, there are talented defensive backs aplenty as we hear in this installment of our draft preview series.
