Pushy Friend

Posted by Abby Crawford on

Dear Abby,

I am 21 years old, my girlfriend is 18, we've been together for 2 years now. Recently one of my best friends, who i've known for 5 years, admitted that he was in love with my girlfriend. I'm not talkin' crush here, he's claiming love. While she blows it off and assures me and him that she has no interest in him, which I believe (does that make me naive?), he continues to tell her on a daily basis how much he misses her, how hes jealous of me, etc. He has a history of chasing after my ex-girlfriends, or really any female I've been associated with, but this is the first time he started while we were actually dating. It's put an obvious strain on our friendship, and I can feel it straining my relationship. If you could share your opinion or advice I'd greatly appreciate it....Thank You!

Dear Anonymous,

I'm sorry to hear that one of your best friends has fallen for your girl. This can't be easy for you. First of all, I do not think you are naive for trusting your girlfriend. That is a good sign that you two have a strong and loving relationship and you shouldn't feel weird about trusting her. She's still with you, she obviously wants to be with you, not him. Now what to do about your friend?! You said he has a history of chasing after your ex-girlfriends...do you find that odd? Usually, I am one to say that friends are longer lasting than a girlfriend/boyfriend, but in this case, I have to change my opinion.  You have been with this girl for two years, you obviously trust her, and she wants to be with you. If she wanted this other guy, she would have left by now. My only advice is to sit down with your friend, tell him to leave your girlfriend alone, and if he doesn't, it might be time to make a new friend. It isn't fair to you or your girlfriend to have this extra strain on your relationship. Best of luck!!
