Greetings from San Francisco!
Not a bad view eh? I actually took this shot on my last visit here, a rather forgettable trip in January for the Niners 45-31 ousting of the Pack in the playoffs. It's one of my favorite stops in the NFL and over the course of the next couple of days, I'll keep you posted on everything going on as the Packers come west to open the 2013 season on Sunday.
I'm not a superstitious person but the trip out today was fraught with omens that I hope don't carry over to the game. My connecting flight in Chicago had a mechanical issue. Seems the emergency slide wasn't operating properly so they had to find another plane to haul us. I had planned on getting here early afternoon, Pacific Time, in time to catch San Francisco's last practice of the week and visit with a couple of their players at he team's headquarters in Santa Clara. The delay wiped out those plans. I got in about two hours late and missed out on the chance to view Colin Kaepernick's inked arms up close and personal. With that story idea gone, figured I better just check into my hotel and get to work. When I got to my room, there was an industrial fan going full blast on the floor. Seems they shampooed the carpet and it was still drying. Let's try another room. The key didn't work. On the third try, voila! at my desk and typing away.
Back home, some unsettling injury news as both Morgan Burnett and Brad Jones popped up on the final injury report of the week. They, like Casey Hayward, all suffered hamstring pulls in the final pre-season game in Kansas City. Hayward was ruled out for the opener right away but Jones was limited in today's practice and Burnett didn't go at all. Both are listed as questionable for the game. Jarrett Bush was limited today with his ankle injury but is listed as probable. If the Packers want to get a good read on the read option Sunday, they'll need both Burnett and Jones to go. San Francisco has two players on their final report, running back LaMichael James is questionable with a knee injury, he didn't work today. Defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha was limited with a sore collarbone and is listed as questionable.
It's off for some evening sightseeing and terrific cuisine, I could take in some baseball, both the Giants, and across the bay, the A's are home tonight, but I'll pass. I won't pass up the opportunity to bring you some of the flavor surrounding the NFL opener over the next couple of days, along with complete coverage of the game on Sunday.
